We had a lot of energy today!
Ms Branzsen and myself spent some time on the weekend writing report cards. The topic of toys from home came up and from today forward No home toys at school. They are causing problems and interfering with learning in the classroom. The students understand this and we had a conversation about it in class today. Pink shirt day tomorrow. We talked about how wearing pink represents being kind to everyone. We talked about what bullying means. It means being mean on purpose often. We talked about how learning to get along and friendship accidents are different from bullying. Puppet shows will be next week. Wednesday and Thursday 1:30 in our classroom. A note will be sent home tomorrow and you can buy a family ticket for $5. There will be a space for picking what day works best for you. The class is using the money to buy some more exciting books and we are using the process to budget and learn about money. We are looking for a couple class soccer balls. If anyone has one they are happy to donate we would happily take. Please keep a look out for an extra large seal to a lunch kit. We have one in the class but a student is missing theirs and the lunch kit does not work with out it. We have had two great days in room 8! THURSDAY: - We started creating our “setting” piece for our puppet show. Each student is working on their own setting to go along with their storyline. - The students are loving free time to read, so after snack and lunch eating times we spend about 15 minutes quiet reading. Either on their own or with a friend. Our buddies even came to read with us! Ask you child if he/she remembers their buddies name. - We have started skip counting in Math. Almost all the students have mastered counting by 10s to 100 and are now working on counting by 5s. See how far your child can skip count by 10’s and then 5’s. -Exploration time FRIDAY: -We started the day off by learning/reviewing our “A word families” (at, an, ap, ag, ad) by playing a game. Your child has the game in their red take home folder that they can teach you and finish over the long weekend if you find time. No need to bring it back to school though. -We explores First Nations shapes, learned their names, and compared them to the 2D and 3D shapes we have been learning. Ask your child if they can name and draw you one or two of the shapes we learned. We read a story about the Native North West Coast Animals to see the shapes within the art work. Students then explored and played with the cut out shapes creating their own animals. See pictures. - Spent time in the forest for gym. - Created questions around Community for when we start to visit the different places around Squamish. Our first visit is to the Squamish Library and School Board office next Tuesday. - Exploration time. We have been working on some great things in class. Here are some things we have been focusing on and some events planned for February.
Literacy Groups The kindergarten and the grade ones have been working in grade groups 4 times a week building their English Language Arts skills. Letter/sound association, vowel sounds, blending consonant sounds, syllables, and sight words are some of what is being worked on during this time. Puppet Projects The class is in the stages of planning their own puppets with the hopes to build their own story play. They will be creating a setting backdrop and we plan to put on a real show inviting parents to come. They have discussed charging for tickets for the show. More information on dates for this will be posted soon (probably first week of March). Outside Collaboration All 4 K and K/1 classes have been going outside 20 minutes before scheduled recess. We are encouraging the children to meet new friends, learn new outside games, and work together to solve problems. On drier days we are taking our learning into the forest as well. Thanks for sending everyone dressed to be outside. It is much more enjoyable to play the games when properly dressed. Community All 4 classes are also starting to look closely at community. We will be visiting many places in Squamish and examining the different connections we have to these places. We will be asking some questions to every place we visit. We will examine how these places help the community and how we can help them. We will learn about the importance of community and how it makes us feel to be part of one. Valentines Day For Valentines day we will be making a friendship salad together for morning snack. Please send one cup of chopped fruit to class on Feb 14th. We will be looking at friendship for the day and handing out cards to classmates. If you are sending cards to school please ensure there are enough for each member of the class (19 students). It is easier to just write who the card is from for handing out purposes. 100 Day We have a fun day planned to celebrate the number 100 on February 21. A note will be sent home for you to collect (and count with your child) 100 pieces of a particular food item. The day will involve many different 100 themed activities. Home Reading Great work doing home reading together. Grade ones should be reading 1 book every night (5-10 minutes). It is good to start getting into the habit of reading a book together every night for the Kindergarten students as well. The research is very clear that this 5 minutes at home is very helpful for school and reading success. Pointing to the words (tracking) is very helpful for beginning readers and using the pictures is the first stage of reading. If your child is really not wanting to do this at home it is fine to read it to them. If you have any questions about this feel free to come in and ask. Today * Olivia was the helper * Notice about library field trip went home * Literacy groups - grade ones Magic/slient E and bl sl gl blends * Straw connecters added to exploration choice (can you build something taller than yourself) * Ask what are the self assessment questions during quiet reading - is reading for 10 minutes easy or hard? * Studio Hello Families!
•Sadie was our Special Helper today. •We practiced our Ground Hog day poem and talked about what Ground Hog day is (February 2). We made a predictions whether or not the Ground Hog will see his shadow tomorrow. The students have HOMEWORK to figure out tomorrow if the Ground Hog saw his shadow or not and what that means. See the pictures for our predictions and whether or not your child’s prediction was right! •We had an Earthquake Drill! •In literacy groups today the Grade 1s worked on sorting picture into the right word family “an” vs “at” •We visited the gym and did some skipping. •Most of the students decided to do Art and Create or LEGO during center time. Ask your child what he/she made during that time. Or what they were building with the LEGO. |
